Control Software Engineer

Job Description

The candidate in this position will design and develop distributed control and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators. This position will be responsible for systems analysis, requirements gathering, design, implementation, integration, test and documentation. Development will take place in the EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) toolkit often used within the particle accelerator community.

This position has a multi-disciplinary role, teaming with software and hardware engineers, and has continuous interaction with scientists comprised mainly of particle accelerator physicists and operators.  



  • Requirements gathering and generating design documentation.
  • Writing prototype code to evaluate methods and writing production code for test and integration.
  • Analyzing and designing solutions, and participating in the completion and commissioning of the final software package.
  • Designing and developing new Linux kernel and EPICS drivers, embedded applications and user interfaces.
  • Responsible for project leadership within cost and time constrained environments.



  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience with C and C++
  • Experience with requirements and design specification creation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively within a dynamic work environment.

 Desired Skills


  • Experience with embedded systems, real time architecture, software design and development.
  • Knowledge of hardware real-time architectures and their impact on software.
  • Experience with the EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) toolkit.
  • Experience with Linux RT, vxWorks, or other RTOS platforms.
  • Experience with the xTCA hardware platform.
