Treatment Control System for PT

The Treatment Control System (TCS) is the central system in the control system of a PT facility that synchronizes the operation of all the devices and enables the users the execution of clinical and QA workflows.
The primary objective of system is to obtain all required information from the oncology information system (OIS) and enable users to perform the treatment of the patient.
The system acts as the main coordinator of all actions and resources (software and hardware) based on defined workflows and workflow profiles. It interfaces with the medical systems (OIS and PACS), beam production and delivery, patient positioning devices, safety system and provides the GUI for the clinical and other users of the system. 

In a particle therapy solution, TCS has the following roles:

  1. Main user interface for the treatment execution: TCS provides the graphical user interfaces that shows the relevant treatment information and guides the user through the execution of the treatment workflow. TCS also provides hardware control units like hand pendants to control the positioning and imaging.
  2. Workflow orchestration: TCS is the central link between the different systems involved in the treatment execution. TCS coordinates the systems during the execution of the treatment workflow, provides the required data and controls their operation. TCS, for example, positions the patient couch by instructing the robot and supplies the scanning system with the required scanning information from the treatment plan.
  3. Safety and record keeping: As a Record and Verify system, TCS not only links the hardware but also the processes of treatment planning, delivery and record-keeping. TCS reduces the risk of treatment errors, for example, by preventing irradiation in a wrong position, supporting the verification of the treatment setup and recording all relevant information.

Using Cosylab's TCS as basis for the development of the treatment control system has several advantages:
